主 题:Trade, Institution Quality and Child Health

摘 要
This paper examines the effects that trade have on child health in the least developed countries (LDCs) designated by the United Nations.
To solve the endogeneity of trade, we use Lin and Sim (2013) construction of trade cost based on Baltic Dry Index (BDI) as instruments of trade. We find that the expansion in trade leads to an increase in child mortality rate in autocracies but to no significant effect in democracies. To explain this finding, we show that in autocracies trade leads to a statistically significant and quantitatively large effect on environment degradation. In democracies on the other hand, environment does not deteriorate significantly after the expansion of trade.
