摘 要:China’s 35-year implementation of theone-child policy has generated more than 150 million only child, and they havebecome an increasingly important source of labor force in the market. Bysending fictitious resumes to online job postings in various industries and jobcategories in the largest Chinese city Shanghai, we investigate how being anonly child with different gender affects an applicant’s probability ofreceiving a job interview. Specifically, we manipulate the combination ofapplicant’s gender and only child identity in the resumes and guarantee othercharacteristics such as education background and working experiencestatistically identical. Our results show that the likelihood of receiving acallback for an interview is significantly lower for the only child than forthe sibling ones, and this is robust across various industries, job categoriesas well as firm size and ownership. When interacting one-child identity withgender, a greater gap in the likelihood of receiving a callback is seen betweenfemale only-child and sibling-child applicants, while the difference disappearsbetween male only-child and sibling-child applicants. Surprisingly, theconventional gender discrimination against females can merely be observedwithin the only-child group. The aforementioned interactive effect illustratesthe role of the expected number of children women can rear in the conventionallabor market gender discrimination, and further raises concern on a potentialeffect of relaxing the One Child Policy to allowing only-child parents havingtwo children on increasing labor market discrimination.
