Title: Does Education Shape Gender Role Attitudes? Evidence from China

Abstract: This paper examines whether education plays an important role in shaping gender-role attitudes of individuals. We exploit the exogenous variation in temporal and geographical impacts of Compulsory Schooling Law (CSL). Using the data from the China General Social Survey, we find that the experience of participating in higher education changes individual gender role attitudes. The extra schooling induced by the compulsory schooling law leads to more egalitarian gender role attitude. However, schooling only significantly affects the gender-role attitudes of urban individuals, but has no significant effect for rural individuals. Finally, we find an insignificant effect of education on the division of household chores.
