Barbara M. Fraumeni is one of four new 2025 American Economic Association (AEA) Distinguished Fellows, one of the highest honors in the U.S. economics profession. The award, for her significant contribution to the field of economics, was presented at the AEA annual meeting in Philadelphia on January 4th.

Joining her at the champagne reception, were Professor Haizheng Li of CHLR and Assistant Professor of Finance Xiang Zheng of Connecticut College (CUFE/CHLR MA in 2015), pictured above. The award citation highlighted Professor Fraumeni’s influential research on human capital, productivity, economic growth, and R&D. It also noted her role as a Special-Term Professor at CHLR and her previous service as Chief Economist of the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

The citation further recognized her leadership in advancing women in the economics profession. Professor Fraumeni helped establish the first AEA Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) mentoring program for females. She later was awarded the CSWEP Bell award for her substantial efforts to further the status of women in the economics professions.
