The conference will mark the release of the 15th annual China Human Capital Report-2023. It will feature distinguished keynote speeches, plenary and parallel sessions on critical topics related to human capital and labor markets on December 9 preceded by an onsite reception on December 8.

Submissions

We welcome papers on topics dealing with broad areas of human capital and labor markets.

· Please submit an extended abstract (400-500 words in English) by midnight (12am) on November 8, 2023 (Eastern Standard Time) online at:

· Each session consists of paper presentations and discussion, both in English.

· Decisions on submissions will be announced in mid November.

· All papers accepted for presentation must be submitted to the conference by December 1, 2023 (Beijing Time, GMT+8) so that discussants will have enough time to prepare comments.

· We prefer in-person sessions, but there will also be online sessions to accommodate presenters who are unable to join in person.


China Economic Review Special Issue

  • All      submissions accepted for presentation will be eligible for submission to a      Special Issue of China Economic      Review.


Keynote Speaker Bio


· Professor Lochner is currently Professor of Economics at the University of Western Ontario and Canada Research Chair in Human Capital and Inequality. He also serves as Co-coordinator of the Markets Network of the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Global Working Group and maintains research affiliations with the National Bureau of Economic Research in the U.S., the Rimini Centre for Economic Analysis in Italy, and CESifo in Germany. He is a Fellow of the Society of Labor Economists and of the International Association for Applied Econometrics. He is also an editor at the Journal of Political Economy, and served as an editor at the Journal of Labor Economics (2013-2021). He received his PhD in economics from the University of Chicago in 1998.


  • Professor      Lochner’s research is largely devoted to the study of human capital      formation throughout the lifecycle; although, he has also studied aspects      of criminal behavior. His current research examines intergenerational      mobility, including the nature of family investments in children and child      development; post-secondary financing policies, especially the structure      and implications of student loan contracts; and the evolution of skills      and skill prices in the economy.



Specially-Invited Discussant Bio


· Professor Jong-Wha Lee is the Eminent Professor at Korea University. He was previously Chief Economist and Director General of Economics and Research Department at the Asian Development Bank and an economist at the International Monetary Fund. He has served as a senior adviser for international economic affairs to the former President of South Korea and G20 sherpa. He has also served as president of both the Korea Economic Association and the Korea International Economic Association. He has taught at Australian National University, Columbia University, Harvard University and Peking University. He obtained his Ph.D. and Master’s degree in economics from Harvard University.

· Professor Lee has made significant contributions to the field of economics, with particular focus on human capital, growth, international finance, and economic integration. His most recent books include Crisis and Recovery: Learning from the Asian Experience (World Scientific, 2016), and Education Matters: Global Schooling Gains from the 19th to the 21st Century with Robert J. Barro (Oxford University Press, 2015). He has been honored with numerous awards, including Korean National Academy of Sciences Award, Kyung-Ahm Prize, Inchon Award, Cheongram Prize, Maekyung Economist Award, and Dasan Economics Award.
