Title:  The Impact of Hospital Competition on Medical Expenses——A Study of Shanghai Medical Service Market

Speaker: Li Ting

Abstract: This paper attempts to examine the impact of hospital competition on medical costs and the provision of medical services. We used the sample data of Shanghai urban employee medical insurance participants 2013-2015 to examine the competitive effects of secondary and tertiary hospitals. The empirical study found that there were significant differences between the patients served in the secondary and tertiary hospitals. It is a complementary relationship; the strengthening of competition will significantly increase the number of hospital stays for secondary hospitals that mainly serve elderly patients with chronic diseases, and the total cost does not change significantly; and the tertiary hospitals that mainly serve relatively young or acute patients face Competition will significantly reduce medical costs and there is no significant change in the number of hospital stays.
